Johannesburg Chimney Guide
You can book a chimney sweep any time of the year. What really matters are the signs to look out for, the best wood to burn, and how to keep everything safe and clean.
A chimney can be swept at any time of year. If it’s dirty, blocked, or smelling, there’s no benefit in waiting until autumn or spring.
That said, many Johannesburg homeowners naturally book in two main windows simply because that’s when they think about their fireplaces:
If your chimney needs attention now, message us. There’s no need to wait.
March to May is popular because people want the fireplace ready before the first proper cold front. October and November is when smoke problems, smells, and poor draw become obvious after the fireplace has been used.
Booking earlier in the year is often more relaxed — you’re not competing with the last-minute rush that happens once the weather turns cold.
Bottom line: The best time to sweep is when the chimney needs it. Any month is fine. Waiting only makes sense if the flue is already clean and you’re just planning ahead.
You don’t need a calendar to know when it’s time. Watch for these:
Any of these is a good reason to book — regardless of the month.
When you burn wood, smoke leaves behind a substance called creosote. It sticks to the inside of the flue and can be soft and flaky or hard and tar-like.
Creosote is flammable. The more of it that builds up, the higher the risk of a chimney fire. Regular sweeping removes it before it becomes a problem.
In Johannesburg we also see a lot of fine soot, ash, and the occasional collection of leaves or debris that finds its way in over summer.

The type of wood you burn has a big effect on how quickly creosote builds up.
If the wood hisses, steams, or produces thick white smoke when it first lights, it’s still too wet. Aim for wood with a moisture content under 20%.
Once the cold weather arrives, these issues show up regularly:
Most of these are far less dramatic when the chimney was cleaned before the heavy use started.
A simple guideline that works for most Johannesburg homes:
| Usage | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Occasional weekend fires | Once a year |
| Regular winter use | Once a year minimum, twice is better |
| Heavy use (most evenings) | Every 6–12 months |
If you’re not sure, look at the signs listed earlier. The chimney will usually tell you when it’s due.
If you use the fireplace every winter, a simple annual maintenance plan (two scheduled sweeps) takes the thinking out of it. You get priority booking and you’re less likely to end up with a blocked flue in the middle of a cold snap.
